SSRI for depression

I have been started on an SSRI for my depression. How long will I need to be on this medication?
In most cases, the antidepressants are recommended for 9-12 months. You will be assessed and then the dose may be lowered or increased, depending on your symptoms. These pills do not work immediately and the full benefit takes anywhere from 3-4 weeks. Individuals who experience depression because of a major stress, loss of family should take the antidepressant until the mental symptoms subside. If the depression is severe, then the medication has to be continued indefinitely. The majority of people with depression need medication for a long time otherwise, relapses are common.
