Stimulants for depression


Can one take CNS stimulants to treat depression
Sure, stimulants are also prescribed to patients with depression. However, these drugs have many adverse effects and thus, physicians do not like to prescribe them. Drugs likes like dexamphetamine, methylphenidate, pemoline and modafinil are sometimes prescribed to treat depression. Evaluation of studies have shown that for the short term, these drug do help improve the mood. However, the major limitation to the use of these drugs is there side effects. Moreover, many of these psycho stimulants are addictive and cause physical dependence. 
Today with the availability of SSRIs, you are going to be hard pressed to find a doctor who is willing to prescribe you psychostimulants. These medications need close follow up because of adverse effects.
