Can one take CNS stimulants to treat
depression
Sure, stimulants are also prescribed to
patients with depression. However, these drugs have many adverse effects and
thus, physicians do not like to prescribe them. Drugs likes like
dexamphetamine, methylphenidate, pemoline and modafinil are sometimes
prescribed to treat depression. Evaluation of studies have shown that for the
short term, these drug do help improve the mood. However, the major limitation
to the use of these drugs is there side effects. Moreover, many of these psycho
stimulants are addictive and cause physical dependence.
Today with the
availability of SSRIs, you are going to be hard pressed to find a doctor who is
willing to prescribe you psychostimulants. These medications need close follow up because of adverse effects.
