What is interstitial cystitis?
Interstitial cystitis is a clinical
disorder that is a puzzle to most doctors. It typically presents with day and
night time urinary frequency, urgency and pelvic pain. No one knows why this
condition occurs or how it causes the symptoms. There are no good treatments
for it and even making the diagnosis can be a hassle. Women generally present
with an increased urge to urinate and may have moderate to severe pain in the
groin and anal area. Sometimes the condition disappears on it own but often returns.
Most women go
through months or years of delay before diagnosis is made. The problem appears
to be with the bladder. The best people to look after this disorder are the
urologists.
